1. SUPPLY CHAIN TO EFFICIENCY GAIN

Workstream Leader: Roddy Davies, Sector Manager for Production and Eco-Design, Envirowise Scotland
Workstream Facilitator: Vince McKeown, Membership Manager, SCDI
Venue: Robert Aytoun Suite

Roddy gave an overview of some of the key issues as regards the efficient use of resources within the supply chain illustrating this with some industry examples. The discussion which followed was wide ranging and reflected a variety of themes, but in itself was probably illustrative of the fragmented nature of advice and infrastructure available to assist industry. There was clearly a role for Envirowise working with bodies such as the Carbon Trust and Energy Savings Trust to give industry a clearer understanding of who does what and what the range of measures industry can take to reduce inefficiency and waste of resources. Clear, open and deep engagement with suppliers was essential to maximising potential gains as was the need for openness within companies allowing a bottom up as well as top down approach to generating ideas for efficiency savings. In terms of employee buy in a number of contributors made the point that provision of accurate and easily understood information into progress being made as a result of any efficiency schemes put in place by employers was vital to establishing ongoing commitment and trust from employees. Finally in terms of buildings the need for energy and resource efficiency as key drivers need to be established at the concept and design stage of the structure and not part way through projects. Thus very much not an add on, but an integral part of the whole construction process. It was agreed the planning system had a role to play in encouraging this approach.
