Workstream Leader: Roddy Davies, Sector Manager for Production and Eco-Design, Envirowise Scotland
Workstream Facilitator: Vince McKeown, Membership Manager, SCDI
Venue: Robert Aytoun Suite

Working with your supply chain in environmental improvement activities is vital to realising cost benefits for all involved. Adopting a systemic approach to control costs within the supply chain can realise significant savings through the likes of waste minimisation, packaging reduction and logistical optimisation. This workstream will outline the drivers and benefits for supply chain partnership working and encourage delegates to discuss the practicalities of implementing change and realising the benefits within a business and its supply chain.

He has experience conducting waste minimisation projects and offering advice about WEEE and eco-design.

2. CONNECTING SCOTLAND WITH THE WORLD - Click here for a Synopsis of the Workstream

Workstream Leader: Hugh Aitken, Head of Airline and Network Business Development, BAA Scotland
Workstream Facilitator: Iain McTaggart, General Manager, SCDI
Venue: James Graham Suite

Scotland is better connected than ever before, with 150 destinations now served from the three busiest airports – Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow. However, a tough economic backdrop and challenges within a globally competitive aviation industry will require Scotland to work even harder if it is to grow direct international connectivity over the coming years. Capacity constraints at Heathrow also risk Scotland’s access to the national hub and its vital long haul connections. This workstream will examine how government and business can work together to ensure the industries on which our economy depends, including tourism, financial services and oil and gas, continue to benefit from a growing route network.

Hugh Aitken
Hugh has worked in a number of roles across BAA including leading the commercial activity for a major new IT system, leading the finance function in Edinburgh and most recently as Head of Business Development for the three BAA airports in Scotland, as well as Southampton. In this role Hugh leads the team which manages the end to end relationship with airlines. In particular the team focuses on developing new routes and sustaining the current route network across the airports.

3. INSPIRE YOUR EMPLOYEES - CONNECT WITH YOUNG PEOPLE - Click here for a Synopsis of the Workstream

Workstream Leader: Isla McCrone, Head of Determined to Succeed, Scottish Government
Workstream Facilitator: Ian Armstrong, North East Area Manager, SCDI
Venue: Robert Louis Stevenson A Suite

One of the keys to raising levels of employee performance is to create a sense of meaning – this can be achieved by engaging them in real life community-based learning experiences. So rather than develop employees through traditional training courses, leading companies are turning to community-based experiences. These experiences enable employees to develop their skills, make a positive impact in their local community, increase their motivation and enhance your business’ reputation. At this workshop, you will hear directly from school pupils, business managers, learning and development experts and policy makers and learn how, by connecting your business with the local community, you can create a real win-win solution.

Isla McCrone
Isla joined the Scottish Government in September 2003 and is currently on secondment from Young Enterprise Scotland (YES). Prior to joining YES, she worked in the financial services sector in a wide range of roles. She currently heads up Determined to Succeed, the Government’s strategy for enterprise in education and has responsibility for employer engagement to support More Choices, More Chances, the strategy to reduce the proportion of young people not in education, employment or training.

4. DIGITAL SCOTLAND - Click here for a Synopsis of the Workstream

Workstream Leader: Robin O’Kelly, Head of Corporate Affairs, T-Mobile
Workstream Facilitator: Niall Stuart, Press & Government Affairs Manager, SCDI
Venue: William Dunbar Suite

Around the world digital and broadband technologies are reshaping our Communications, Entertainment, Information and Knowledge industries, and the wider economy. Indeed our economic success will increasingly be defined by our ability to use and develop digital technologies. A successful Scotland must be a Digital Scotland.
This group will look at how we ensure that our wired and wireless networks can meet the needs of the modern knowledge-based economy, and the increasingly bandwidth-hungry applications of business and consumers. And while Next Generation Networks will soon be a reality for many of our successful urban centres, is the promise of 2Mb broadband across the country enough for our more economically fragile areas? And how will this commitment be delivered, who will pick up the cost, and will it be enough to deliver a truly Digital Scotland?

Robin O’Kelly
Robin is Head of Corporate Affairs at T-Mobile and has over 17 years experience in corporate communications. Previous roles have included a variety of consultancy and in house positions, including two years as Head of External Communications at BG Group plc, the FTSE 30 oil and gas company. Robin started his career at Weber Shandwick, specialising in International Corporate Communications. After graduating, he spent a year in academic publishing, before joining the Prince of Wales’ office, where he primarily focused on business and industry-related issues, helping to develop initiatives such as the Prince of Wales’s Business Leaders Forum and working closely with Business in the Community.

Workstream Leader: Dr Aydin Kurt-Elli, Chief Executive Officer, Lumison
Workstream Facilitator: Gareth Williams, H&I Manager and Policy Manager, North, SCDI
Venue: Robert Louis Stevenson B Suite

Being well connected only makes sense if there is something to ‘connect to’! Dr Aydin Kurt-Elli will present how Lumison is “enabling the application” for businesses around the world. Offering a brief introduction to cloud computing and virtualisation, he will embark on a painfree test of the popular thesis that this model for outsourcing applications can really reduce costs, CO2, and truly put applications out to the network.

Aydin set up Edinburgh Network Technologies (formerly known as edNET) whilst still a second year student, Aydin ran the business part time until achieving his GMC registration. After working as a junior house officer for a year, he left the medical profession to run edNET fulltime. Workstream Facilitator: Jane Martin, Projects Manager - Young Engineers and Science Clubs, SCDI

7. PRODUCTIVITY? IT’S TIME TO DELIVER - Click here for a Synopsis of the Workstream

Workstream Leader: Gerry Docherty, Chair, ICT Forum for Scotland
Workstream Facilitator: Iain McTaggart, General Manager, SCDI
Venue: James Graham Suite

In this recession, the survivors and the winners will be those who can achieve world-class productivity. Recent research shows that half of Europe’s productivity gains in the last decade have been the result of skilled exploitation of ICT. Worryingly, Scotland’s comparative performance has lagged behind.
In your organisation, is ICT just another unwelcome cost, or are you truly exploiting its potential to maximise your efficiency and competitive advantage? What steps can we take to reverse Scotland’s continued under-performance on productivity?
This pragmatic workshop reviews the latest benchmark analysis from the Scottish Government, and outlines far-reaching proposals that could transform Scotland’s economic performance.

Carole McCarthy
The new Government Economic Strategy highlights Innovation as a key driver of economic growth, affecting company growth and productivity and the growth of key industries. Carole is responsible for assisting in driving two key priorities: increasing Scotland’s performance on innovation beyond the narrow focus on science and technology and strengthening the link between Scotland’s research base and business innovation, addressing low levels of R&D.
