SCDI Events - Engagement for Members

SCDI delivers an extensive Events Programme of around 100 engagement events for our Members throughout Scotland, and also some key sessions in London. Our programme is varied, ranging from policy-related engagement sessions, to knowledge sessions, informal networking opportunities and our key strategic platform events each year. 

The majority of our events are free of charge to our Members to attend (with the exception of some keynote events such as Forum; National Business Convention; International Business Summit; Highlands & Islands & Business Excellence Awards; and some one-off conference events).

In addition to unique events which SCDI have delivered, such as Hydro Nation / Oil & Gas Conferences; Aviation ConferenceAgile Regulation Conference; and Future Skills Summits, amongst others - as an overview, our core Events Programme includes: 


Meet the Politician and Political Challenge Series
We deliver an on-going programme of Meet the Politician - 'Political Challenge' series of events, enabling our members to convey their views to key MPs, MSPs, MEPs and other parliamentary and committee representatives.


Members’ Business Engagement & Networking Events (Lunches & Evenings)
These regular, informal occasions afford the opportunity to network with fellow members and receive an update on SCDI activities and also hear briefly from guest speakers on a relevant topic of interest.   


Influencers’ Series Dinners
Our programme of Influencers’ Series Dinners delivered throughout the year provides members with the opportunity to meet, learn from and engage with key speakers from the public, private & social economy sectors in relaxed surroundings conducive to informed debate and discussion.   
The guest speaker is invited to address guests under the ‘Chatham House’ rule for around 20 minutes, after which a wide-ranging discussion is encouraged. Attendance ranges from circa 40 to 50 senior representatives from across SCDI’s membership. In addition to the private corporate sector, guests are drawn from government, local authorities, trade unions, the social economy sector and academia.


Business Seminars & Breakfasts
Seminars and Business Breakfast sessions designed to inform our members on topical business issues are held for members throughout the year in a variety of locations. 


SCDI Annual Lecture
The SCDI Annual Lecture is an event of Scotland-wide interest held annually in Aberdeen in January and is attended by around 250 members.
Past keynote speakers have included Paul Walsh, (then) Chief Executive, Diageo plc; Peter Robertson, (then) Vice Chairman, Chevro Corporation; and Lord Smith of Kelvin, Chairman of SSE and the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee. The speaker at the 2013 Annual Lecture was Samir Brikho, Chief Executive, AMEC plc; and at the 2014 Annual Lecture was Dr Marcus Richards, Oil & Gas industry leader and formerly Group CEO, Dana Petroleum plc and Senior Vice-President, BP. Mark Carne, Chief Executive of Network Rail delivered the Keynote Address at our SCDI Annual Lecture 2015. Guests at the SCDI Annual Lecture 2016 heard a Keynote Address given by Dame Ann Dowling OM, President of the Royal Academy of Engineering and also Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Cambridge. In January 2017, our SCDI Annual Lecture 2017 was given by Martin Temple, Chair of the Health & Safety Executive. Plans for our Annual Lecture 2018 are in progress.


SCDI Forum
The Forum is SCDI’s keynote annual policy Conference, held in spring each year. It is attended by circa 250-300 delegates and is widely regarded as the key networking and policy engagement event in the Scottish business calendar. YESC Celebration of Engineering & Science 
This is an exciting opportunity for SCDI’s network of over 1,400 Young Engineers & Science Clubs across all 32 local authority areas in Scotland to showcase their engineering activities and compete in a series Technology Challenge set by industry-related member companies. The action-packed event is held in June each year and is attended by around 600 young engineers, teachers and STEM-related (science, technology, engineering & maths) companies. A series of YESC Regional events are also held around the country during the year.

SCDI International Business Summit
Our inaugural SCDI International Business Summit 2015 - 'Scotland: Driving Global Ambition' took place in June 2015 and brought together leading figures in Scotland's international business community. Providing a high-level forum for senior representatives, this business summit explored how Scotland can maximise its performance in international markets - sharing the experience and insights of successful global players, setting an industry-led agenda to fulfil Scotland's capabilities and encouraging more Scottish businesses to be confident in pursuing international opportunities. Our SCDI International Business Summit 2016
 took place in Glasgow on Wed.8 June 2016 on the theme of 'Global Ambition: Sharing & Building Export Success'. Plans for the 2017 Summit are in progress.


SCDI Highlands & Islands Dinner & Business Excellence Awards
This annual event, held each September in Inverness, is a renowned networking and corporate entertainment occasion for circa 350 members and guests. Awards recognising excellence in a variety of business categories are presented to organisations based in the Highlands & Islands region. Guests also hear from a high profile keynote guest speaker and entertainment is also incorporated into the evening, which is a highlight in the region's calendar.

Our 2016 H&I Business Excellence Awards took place at a black-tie Dinner on Friday 9 September in Inverness with a keynote address from the Rt Hon David Mundell MP, Secretary of State for Scotland and the Awards Ceremony hosted by entertainer Tim Vine. The 2017 Awards will take place on 8 September. More details soon.


National Business Convention
Jointly delivered by SCDI and the FSB for Scotland's SME business community, the National Business Convention has taken place in autumn and focused on providing practical, informative and relevant advice to help SME businesses meet the challenges and embrace the opportunities of working both within Scotland and internationally, through a series of networking opportunities, keynote speakers an interactive workshops. SCDI Scotland's International Awards 
SCDI's Scotland's International Awards & Dinner established as a premier networking event in the Scottish business calendar. With around 850 guests attending, it provided a unique platform to showcase the global achievements of companies based throughout Scotland in a wide range of sectors to a key business audience. Previous high-profile Keynote Speakers include former New York Mayor Rudy Guiliani; former Secretary General of the UN Kofi Annan; and Dr.Madeleine Albright, Former US Secretary of State. SCDI in London
SCDI host a series of engagement events in London during the year, attended by London-based members, politicians and academics. Our 'Caledonian Conversations' dinner series focuses on strategic debate of the key economic policy issues for Scotland. The inaugural event saw then-The Rt Hon Danny Alexander MP, Chief Secretary to HM Treasury, share his insights into the challenges and opportunities for Scotland's economy and the impact of the Budget measures. We have also hosted Dover House Receptions in the company of the Secretary of State for Scotland, and delivered specific Receptions - such as during Commonwealth Week in relation to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
