Chair: Alf Young, Economic Commentator  

Alf Young recently retired from The Herald where he held a series of senior editorial positions and was a leading columnist on business, economic and political issues. After an earlier career as a teacher and lecturer and a brief spell in politics, Alf's career in Scottish journalism spanned thirty years. He was a member of the group which devised the financial arrangements for Scotland's new devolved government, a member of BP's Scottish advisory board and chair of the Glasgow advisory board of Common Purpose between 2000 and 2007. He currently chairs the board of Riverside Inverclyde, the urban regeneration company charged with revitalising the waterfront on the Lower Clyde and recently became chair of Social Investment Scotland which provides loan finance to Scotland's third sector.

Lena Wilson is Chief Executive of Scottish Enterprise.  Prior to this, Lena was Chief Operating Officer of Scottish Enterprise and the CEO of Scottish Development International, leading Scottish Enterprise in supporting companies to grow and Scottish Development International in helping to promote Scottish businesses overseas and attracting new high value investment to Scotland.  In a career spanning over 20 years, she has held a range of positions covering all aspects of economic development.  Seconded to World Bank in 1998 for 2 years, she worked in over 20 countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia advising governments on private sector development. Lena is a Board member of the Prince’s Scottish Youth Business Trust,  Board of Management member of Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland and Ambassador for the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice.

Richard Ackroyd

Richard Ackroyd was appointed as Chief Executive on 25 March 2008 and has over twenty years experience in the water industry. Prior to joining Scottish Water Richard had been a Director of Yorkshire Water since 1996, latterly as Director of Regulation and Investment. Richard was also Chairman of Water UK from 2006 to 2008.  He is a solicitor by profession and has previously been Head of Legal Services for Yorkshire Water following a period in private practice.

 

Keith Anderson

Keith Anderson joined ScottishPower in 1999 and has worked in a variety of roles including Head of Internal Audit and UK Strategy Director.  Keith was appointed as Managing Director of ScottishPower Renewables in 2005.  His responsibility encompasses all of the Group’s renewables activity in the UK including acquisition, project development and asset operation.  Keith also sits on the Iberdrola Executive Management Team Board.  Prior to joining ScottishPower, Keith had worked with some major financial institutions including The Royal Bank of Scotland and Standard Life, as well as working as a management consultant with Ernst & Young.

 

Allan Burns

Allan Burns has been a co-opted member of the Scotland Committee of Action for Children since 2009. He is an experienced Non Executive and Managing Director having worked both in the UK and International markets with responsibilities that required local, regional and global leadership. His business experiences stretches over 35 years in consumer, manufacturing and distribution industries, ranging from vehicles, pharmaceuticals, oil to alcoholic drinks. He has led and managed in both SME and large corporate organisations and has been actively involved with acquisition, turnaround and restructuring businesses internationally achieving transformational business results and cultural change.   He currently holds positions as, Chairman of Scotland Food and Drink, Vice Chair of the National Theatre of Scotland, Court Member and Visiting Professor of Napier University Edinburgh and previously held board positions with the CBI, SCDI, Scottish Enterprise and membership of the Futures Forum.  He retired from Diageo Plc in May 2006 where he was Executive Director of Diageo in Scotland as well as holding Group Procurement Director of Diageo world wide.

 

Sir Sandy Crombie

Sir Sandy Crombie joined the Board of RBS plc as Senior Independent Director in June 2009.  He is also Chairman of the Edinburgh UNESCO City of Literature Trust; Vice Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and President of the Cockburn Association. In 2007, he was the Prince of Wales Ambassador for Corporate Social Responsibility in Scotland.  Sandy retired from the position of Group Chief Executive of Standard Life Plc on 31st December 2009, after 43 years service with the Company. He held a number of senior positions in Actuarial, IT and Operations divisions before becoming Chief Executive of Standard Life Investments when it was launched in 1998 and then Group Chief Executive in 2004. He was a Director of the Association of British Insurers, a member of the Chancellor of the Exchequer's High Level Group, and latterly served on the Chancellor's Insurance Industry Working Group.

 

Brendan Dick

Brendan Dick is Director for BT Scotland.  His prime responsibilities are to develop BT’s Group wide activities in Scotland, reflecting the country’s unique situation within the UK.  A graduate of the University of Edinburgh, much of Brendan’s early career was spent in information technology.  His external interests are many and varied. Brendan is Chair of Scottish Business in the Community and e-skills Scotland. He is Honorary President of the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations, a board member of the SCDI and a member of the CBI Scotland Council, Scotland’s 2020 Climate Group and a business representative on the Lowland Reserve Forces Regional Employer Support Group. Previous appointments include board membership of SCVO and the Edinburgh International Science Festival plus being on the advisory panel of Common Purpose.

 

Peter Lederer OBE

Peter Lederer is Chairman of Gleneagles Hotel Ltd.  He has developed the resort/hotel into one of the premier hotels in the world. Gleneagles is recognised as a leader in the hospitality industry in terms of service, training, marketing and innovation. The hotel has been owned by Guinness/Diageo  plc since 1985.  Peter is Chairman of VisitScotland; a board member of The Leading Hotels of the World and Hamilton & Inches; President of the Institute of Hospitality (formerly HCIMA); a Patron of the Hospitality Industry Trust Scotland; a Trustee of the Springboard Educational Trust and Chairman of the One & All Foundation.  He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Business Administration by Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh.  In addition, Peter is a Master Innholder and Freeman of the City of London, as well as a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Innholders.

Robin Presswood

Robin Presswood is Business & Strategy Manager with Fife Council Development Services, with responsibility for planning policy, economic development, renewable energy, sustainability and business infrastructure.  He has 20 years experience in local government economic development, and is currently Chair of the Scottish Local Authority Economic Development Group (SLAED). He is a Non-Executive Director of Business Gateway Fife.  Robin has a strong interest in the arts having served on the Scottish Arts Council, and is currently Chairman of Dundee Contemporary Arts.

 

Lady Susan Rice CBE

Susan Rice, a Chartered Banker, is Managing Director, Lloyds Banking Group Scotland.  She was previously Chairman and Chief Executive of Lloyds TSB Scotland, the first woman to head a UK clearing bank.  Susan has worked at Bank of Scotland and NatWest Bancorp in New York and, in her earlier career, she was a dean at Yale and Colgate universities in America.  She is Senior Independent Director and chairs the Remuneration Committee of Scottish and Southern Energy and sits on the Court of the Bank of England, where she chairs the Audit Committee. She also chairs the Edinburgh International Book Festival and Edinburgh’s Festivals Forum.  A frequent speaker on the future of financial services, leadership and corporate responsibility, Susan sits, inter alia, on Scotland’s Futures Forum, Scotland’s 2020 Climate Leadership Group, the Advisory Board of Oxford University’s Said Business School, Scottish Business in the Community and the HMT Financial Inclusion Taskforce.  Susan has degrees from Wellesley and Aberdeen University, and honorary doctorates from Robert Gordon, Heriot-Watt, Paisley, Queen Margaret, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen Universities.  She is a Fellow of the RSA and the RSE. 

 

Duncan Skinner

Chief Financial Officer, Production Services Network (PSN)

Duncan Skinner is Chief Financial Officer for Production Services Network (PSN).   PSN is the result of a management buy-out of the Production Services element of KBR, the engineering part of Houston-based Halliburton.  Duncan, together with CEO Bob Keiller, worked for 15 months to engineer this separation.  Duncan has 30 years industry experience, primarily in financial, strategic and commercial roles, both at project and corporate level.   He has a BA in management from the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen and is a Chartered Management Accountant (ACMA).  He is North East Chairman and a national Board Member of SCDI; a Director of the International School of Aberdeen Board and represents PSN on the committee of the Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce. 

 

Grahame Smith

General Secretary, Scottish Trades Union Congress

Grahame Smith is General Secretary of the Scottish TUC.  Grahame joined the STUC in 1986 as an Assistant Secretary with responsibility for Health and Social Services and Education and Training matters.  He was appointed as the STUC’s Deputy General Secretary in 1996.   In that role he headed the STUC’s Policy and Campaigns Department and had specific responsibility for the STUC’s work on lifelong learning and public services.  He led the establishment of the STUC Lifelong Learning Unit; the STUC Skills & Lifelong Learning Team and the Ministerial Trade Union Working Party on Lifelong Learning, of which he is a member.  He is a Board member of SCDI and a former member of the Church of Scotland’s Church and Society Council. He is the Vice Chairperson of Glasgow North Regeneration Agency.  Grahame served as a member of the Careers Service Review Committee and was a member of the Ministerial Advisory Group on the Review of the Enterprise Network  In December 2007 he was appointed as a Commissioner for the UK Commission for Employment and Skills.  In December 2008 he joined the Board of Scottish Enterprise.
