The Market

China is undoubtedly one of the most exciting economies in the world. GDP growth figures have averaged around nine percent since the mid-nineties. UK exports to the market have grown by 24% between 2004 and 2005 to reach £4.2bn, resulting in China reaching 17th place in the UK’s export markets.

For Scottish companies there are real opportunities in sectors including Automotive, Chemicals, Education, Energy, Financial Services, ICT, Healthcare, Power, and Water.

For many companies, China can seem alien and a difficult place to do business. Our trade mission offers an excellent vehicle to tap into this market, utilising the various resources set up to assist Scottish businesses in market including the China-Britain Business Council and Scottish Development International’s China offices.

This mission was SCDI’s 11th visit to China.

The Mission

The trade mission was based in Shanghai from Monday 17 March through to Wednesday 19 March. Companies then had the option of traveling to Beijing, remaining in Shanghai or traveling elsewhere in China.  A financial assistance package of £750 was available to participating organisations.

The financial packages are available to for SMEs that are new exporters to this market, to companies that have no previous exports to the market within 12 months, to companies whose turnover from exports is less than 25% of total turnover, and who do not have existing representation in the market.  This funding is provided by UK Trade & Investment via Scottish Development International.

Flexibility is the key on an SCDI trade mission.  The briefing meeting and reception are the only two group meetings that you must attend.  You are entirely free to pursue your own business objectives and include your visit in a wider itinerary if you wish.  Preliminary market research, appointing an agent, researching possible joint ventures, visiting existing customers – these are all valid reasons for participation for manufacturing and service companies alike.

Marketing Assistance
A wide range of chargeable export support services is available through Scottish Development International/UK Trade & Investment.
