Meet the Politician – Michelle Ballantyne MSP, Chair, Scottish Parliament Economy, Energy and Fair Work, Committee

Date:- Friday 26 June 2020 – 11:00am – 12:00 noon

Online joining instructions will be sent the day before the event.

SCDI’s ‘Meet the Politician’ events, in partnership with Oil & Gas UK, give our broad-based membership the opportunity to question an influential Politician about current policies and issues that affect Scotland under the Chatham House rule. They help Politicians to understand the latest concerns of SCDI members and they therefore assist in the policy-making process.

For now, we are moving the series online and the next event will feature Michelle Ballantyne MSP as guest speaker.

Michelle will focus on what needs to be done to deliver post COVID-19 economic recovery and examine how the drive to a low carbon economy and wider energy transition can be part of that process. Following her talk she will handle any pre-submitted questions and any submitted during the Webinar.

In terms of her background, originally trained as a nurse, Michelle has a long history working in healthcare north and south of the border. She continued to work as a nurse while also completing an Honours degree at Heriot Watt University. She then returned to Health Service Management in 2000 before moving in 2005 to head up an independent charity providing specialist drug and alcohol support to children, families and offenders.

She was elected to Scottish Borders Council in 2012, where she served as Leader of the Conservative Group. In May 2017 Michelle became a list MSP for the South Scotland region, covering Midlothian South, Tweeddale, Lauderdale and East Lothian.

At Holyrood she has been the Conservative spokesperson for Childcare and Early Years and Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Communities and Social Security. She is currently the Convener of the Scottish Parliament’s Economy, Energy and Fair Work Committee
