Budget: SCDI Chair writes to the Chancellor of the Exchequer

Ian Wall – Chair SCDI,  writes an open letter to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak

Dear Chancellor,

We very much welcome the support you have provided to businesses and organisations in Scotland to date. However, our members tell us that the extended lockdown has put them under the most severe financial strain and we are now concerned about the potential impact of rising levels of business debt and of the risk of business failures.

We consider it vital that in the upcoming March budget that you make an announcement to extend both the Job Retention Scheme and business support schemes to the end of June. We welcomed the Scottish Government’s announcement of a further 3 months of business rates relief. However, we believe that both governments need to go further and we hope that you will announce an extension in the budget which provides additional funding for the Scottish Government to further extend reliefs in Scotland this year.

We recognise the increasing financial constraints to the Treasury in doing this but feel this is critical to allow viable businesses and organisations to manage their cash flow, staffing and to plan for re-opening and recovery.

I very much look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Ian Wall, Chair
