Meet the Politician – Darren Jones MP, Chair, Westminster Parliament Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy Committee

Date:- Monday 20 July 2020 – 2pm – 3pm

Online joining instructions will be sent the day before the event.

SCDI’s ‘Meet the Politician’ events, in partnership with Oil & Gas UK, give our broad-based membership the opportunity to question an influential Politician about current policies and issues that affect Scotland under the Chatham House rule. They help Politicians to understand the latest concerns of SCDI members and they therefore assist in the policy-making process.

Currently the series is taking place online and the next event will feature

Darren Jones MP as guest speaker.

Darren Chairs the Westminster Parliament’s Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee, which scrutinises the policy, spending and administration of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and its public bodies, including Ofgem, the Financial Reporting Council and the Committee on Climate Change.

In this latest SCDI Meet the Politician event he will touch on some of the major Inquiries currently being undertaken by the Committee, including those on Post Pandemic Economic Growth; The Impact of Coronavirus on Businesses and Workers and their Inquiry on Net Zero and UN Climate Summits. As well as hearing from Darren it will offer SCDI Members the opportunity to ask key questions and feed into some of the thinking around the Committee’s work.

In terms of his background, Darren worked in the NHS for several years before going to Law School at the University of West England in Bristol. He specialised in Technology Law and initially worked at Womble Bond Dickinson LLP in Bristol, where he developed an advisory practice in the energy and telecommunications sectors, later moving to London to become an in-house counsel with BT, advising on data, privacy, cyber-security, telecommunications and consumer law.

He was elected MP for Bristol North West in 2017 and bucked the national trend for the opposition by increasing his majority in the 2019 General Election. Darren replaced Rachel Reeves MP as Chair of the Westminster BEIS Select Committee in May 2020.
