Rupert Soames OBE Delivers the 2020 SCDI Annual Lecture
The 16th SCDI Annual Lecture was last night delivered to a capacity audience at The Marcliffe Hotel in Aberdeen by Rupert Soames OBE, Chief Executive, Serco Group Plc.
At one of the most prestigious events in the North East’s business calendar, Rupert Soames outlined how he had turned around the fortunes of Serco and reflected on the performance of two of their high profile Scottish operations, the cross border rail Caledonian Sleeper service and the lifeline route to Orkney and Shetland operated from Aberdeen by NorthLink Ferries.
The impact of Energy Transition on the Serco business was discussed, and he gave his thoughts on what Governments needed to do in terms of policy to support industry accelerate moves to decarbonise their operations.
In addition, he reflected on BREXIT and what impact new trade deals might have on the private provision of public services in the UK.
Outgoing SCDI Board Member and North East Committee Chair, Trevor Garlick OBE, commented:
“It was a great privilege for my last formal duty as SCDI’s North East Chair to welcome Rupert to join us for our 16th Annual SCDI Lecture in Aberdeen. At a time of unprecedented global change and uncertainty, his insights from the helm of a major international business such as Serco, on these challenges and how they play out across the world, is of significant interest to SCDI and its membership.”
Rupert Soames said:
‘It has been a huge privilege to speak to the SCDI, which is one of the most impressive organisations of its type. Speaking to so many seriously important guests was like going into a lion’s den, but they released me unharmed’.
